Marvel unveils squad-based, tactical ‘Avengers’ game

Marvel unveiled a new Avengers game for Facebook where players can lead their own squad of superheroes through a variety of missions.

Avengers Alliance Tactics will feature combat similar to the 2K hit XCOM: Enemy Unknown, as players put together squads featuring S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and superheroes such as Thor and Iron Man and lead them into battle.

“You get to recruit heroes and develop each of those characters individually,” says T.Q. Jefferson, vice president of game production at Marvel.

The game’s story starts with players traveling to the Savage Land to investigate a mysterious energy anomaly. Boasting a 3-D, top-down view of combat, players assume the role as S.H.I.E.L.D. commander, sending orders to agents and heroes.

Executive producer Gabe Brown sees the game as filling a void on the social network. “There’s not a lot of great tactics games out of Facebook,” he says. “The opportunity to mold a tactics game and a Marvel game into one, it was just too juicy to resist.”

The game will be available soon in the U.S.
