Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer charged over confrontation with Black newspaper carrier

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed two misdemeanor charges against Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer, charging him with false reporting and making false statements to a public servant following a confrontation with a Black newspaper carrier in January.

The charges were filed in the Pierce County District Court on Tuesday. The confrontation occurred in the early morning hours on January 27, 2021 near Vista View Drive in Tacoma when Troyer — who in an unmarked personal vehicle — began following Sedrick Altheimer, a newspaper carrier on his delivery route.

When Altheimer asked why Troyer was following him, Troyer accused him of being a “porch pirate,” according to the statement of probable cause.
