IDRS Files #2: Klad Apparel

Hello from the road to the runway. Have you scored IDRS tickets yet[1]?

Melanie Trygg is one of those designers who was hiding in plain sight. Although she’s been staging her own shows and teaming up with other like-minded indies, it took the Independent Designer Runway Show[2] to get us in front of her. And once it happened, we were pretty smitten.

Hardworking, imaginative, aware, and so darn Seattle, Trygg is longtime Seattleite with Scandinavian roots—and her line, Klad[3], reflects all of the above.

Shop Talk: Show us three to five images of your recent work.Trygg: This (below) is my angular wool vest from fall 2009, one of my first collections. I loved the balance of tailoring and drape.image

(Below) My wool cavalry jacket, fall 2010. The detailing, structure, and draped collar are something I have gone back to for many seasons.

From which garments, collections, and designers do you draw inspiration? This Chloe fall ’14 (below) draped dusty pink wool number makes want to skip summer altogether. A gorgeous level of volume and elegance.

I love the futuristic play and rolled sleeve of this spring 2011 top by Vena Cava (below).

This Vibe Johannson fall 14 asymmetrical zip jacket (below) is so very me, I just wish I did it first! Perfect mix of texture; soft yet very tough.

Who would you most like to dress?I see Lana Del Rey styled so poorly on many occasions. It’s such a shame. Photographed in white for Vogue China in January 2013, she evokes such an old world glamour with her features. I would love the opportunity to dress her in a Klad piece—something bold and modern to contrast her markedly retro-glam look.
