The Top Things to See or Do in Seattle: October 2016

Books & Talks

Nick Offerman

“You know, even working actors can end up having a lot of spare time. And you can either go sit at the Starbucks and wait for your agent to call you or you can go learn how to build a Shaker blanket chest with hand-cut dovetails.”

Having played America’s manliest man, Ron Swanson, on Parks and Recreation, the real Offerman fulfills his alpha male desires through his handiwork in the Offerman Woodshop. He heads to Seattle with his latest book, Good Clean Fun, which serves as both a collection of humorous wood shop stories and an honest-to-goodness how-to book for aspiring woodworkers. Oct 28 Benaroya Hall, lectures.org[1]

Seattle Children’s Festival

Prepare for an ankle-biter invasion as Seattle Center hosts the third annual Seattle Children’s Festival. Kids can grab event passports that guide them through the various areas packed with fun-filled activities: children’s rock bands, a Discovery Zone of hands-on learning, cultural dance performances, arts and craft creation stations (glitter!), and more. It might even be enough to tire them out for a proper nap. Oct 9 Seattle Center, nwfolklife.org/seattlechildrensfestival[2]

Food & Drink

Mario Batali with Tom Douglas

While the rest of the Batali family keeps Seattle fed at Salumi, Mario Batali’s celebrity chef status means he’s got a whole nation to feed. He tackles the problem with his new Big American Cookbook, featuring 250 regionally specific recipes from coast to coast, like gulf gumbos and Pacific Northwest berry pies. Batali travels to UW to chat about the culinary tome with Tom Douglas. Oct 23 University Temple Methodist Church, ubookstore.com[3]

The Big Meal

Food connects us. It’s a through line in our lives. New Century Theatre Company’s production of The Big Meal taps into this truth, packing five generations of a family into a tantalizing multicourse story about love, death, and all the emotional drama in between by focusing exclusively on the meals they share.
