A Frost Advisory is in effect for Colorado’s San Luis Valley as clearing skies and calming winds let overnight temperatures slide into the low 30s early Friday.
The National Weather Service office in Pueblo issued the advisory as high pressure builds back into the region.
Where the Frost Advisory Applies
The advisory runs from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. MDT Friday.
It covers the Del Norte vicinity and northern San Luis Valley, the Alamosa vicinity and central San Luis Valley, and the southern San Luis Valley, all below 8,500 feet.
Cities included are Alamosa, Del Norte, Monte Vista, Center, La Jara, Antonito, Sanford, Manassa, San Luis, Blanca and Fort Garland.
Lower 30s by Early Friday
Forecasters say temperatures in the lower 30s will result in frost formation across the valley floor.
The coldest readings are expected across the central portions of the valley floor.
Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation, and plants left uncovered overnight may not survive.
NWS Pueblo explained what’s driving the cooldown.
A Quick Pattern Change
The frost risk follows a wet stretch across southern Colorado, with NWS Pueblo reporting minor stream flooding in Otero and Bent counties from recent heavy rain.
As that moisture clears out and high pressure takes over, skies are expected to clear and winds will ease, setting up ideal conditions for radiational cooling overnight.
Safety Reminders
Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold, such as covering vegetation or bringing potted plants indoors overnight.
Gardeners and growers in the valley should plan for frost-sensitive crops to be covered before temperatures bottom out early Friday morning.
