Dangerous Freeze and Frost Warnings Issued Across Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota as Temperatures Drop

A Freeze Warning and multiple Frost Advisories are in effect across a wide stretch of Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota as sub-freezing temperatures move in early Friday morning.

The National Weather Service offices in Duluth and Grand Forks have both issued advisories ahead of the cold snap.

Freeze Warning: International Falls, Hibbing, Ely

NWS Duluth has a Freeze Warning in effect from midnight Thursday night to 9 a.m. CDT Friday.

It covers Koochiching, Central St. Louis and North St. Louis counties, including International Falls, Hibbing and Ely.

Forecasters say temperatures could drop as low as 30 degrees.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, and may damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Frost Advisory: Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin’s South Shore

A separate Frost Advisory from NWS Duluth runs the same hours, from midnight Thursday night to 9 a.m. CDT Friday.

In Minnesota, it covers Northern Aitkin, North Itasca, South Itasca, and Northern Cook and Lake counties, including Grand Rapids, Hill City, Bigfork and Isabella.

In Wisconsin, it covers Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Iron, Sawyer and Washburn counties, including Superior, Ashland, Hayward, Hurley, Spooner, Washburn and Bayfield.

Forecasters say temperatures as low as 33 degrees will result in frost formation.

Areas along the South Shore are mainly expected to see frost a few miles or more away from Lake Superior.

NWS Duluth says this is just the start of a multi-night cold stretch.

Frost Advisory: Central and Northern North Dakota, Northwest Minnesota

NWS Grand Forks has issued its own Frost Advisory from midnight tonight to 9 a.m. CDT Friday.

It covers a broad area of central, north central, northwest and west central Minnesota, along with northeast and southeast North Dakota.

Cities included are Fargo, Grand Forks, Moorhead, Bemidji, Devils Lake, Detroit Lakes, Thief River Falls, Park Rapids and Crookston, among many others.

Forecasters say temperatures will drop into the 32 to 36 degree range by sunrise Friday, with clear skies and light winds driving frost formation.

NWS Grand Forks says even areas just outside the advisory could see patchy frost.

More Cold Nights Ahead

Forecasters say widespread frost is expected again Friday night, with a more widespread freeze likely by Sunday night across nearly all areas.

The Brainerd Lakes region has the lowest chance of seeing that Sunday night freeze.

Safety Reminders

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold, such as covering vegetation or bringing potted plants indoors.

Residents with outdoor plumbing in the Freeze Warning area should also take precautions to prevent pipes from freezing.
