A powerful storm system sweeping across northeastern Illinois produced enormous hailstones Tuesday evening, with storm chasers reporting a possible state-record stone measuring up to five inches in diameter.
Meteorologist and storm chaser Matthew Cappucci documented the extreme weather while tracking the storm in rural areas near Buckingham, Illinois. Video and photos circulating online show massive hailstones comparable in size to softballs crashing onto roads and fields as the thunderstorm intensified.
“HOLY SH*T — the Illinois state record hailstone of five inches in diameter has been found northwest of Buckingham,” Cappucci wrote while documenting the storm, adding that the discovery came as the storm produced widespread severe weather.
