The U.S. Embassy in Cambodia has issued a security alert warning Americans to avoid the Cambodia–Thailand border region following a sharp escalation in fighting. The alert, dated December 10, advises U.S. citizens near the frontier and in adjacent provinces to heighten personal security, monitor local media, and be prepared to adjust travel plans quickly as the situation evolves.
The renewed clashes along the disputed frontier have already displaced more than half a million people on both sides of the border, as artillery, rocket fire and airstrikes hit communities in several Thai and Cambodian provinces.
