A Red Flag Warning is in effect for south-central Montana until 8 p.m. MDT this evening, where record warmth, low humidity and gusty winds are creating critical fire weather conditions.
The National Weather Service office in Billings issued the warning for the Gallatin National Forest and nearby counties.
Where the Warning Applies
The warning covers the Gallatin National Forest, plus Wheatland and Sweet Grass counties.
Affected counties include Wheatland, Park, Sweet Grass and Gallatin.
Hot, Dry and Windy
West winds of 10 to 20 mph are expected, with gusts up to 35 mph.
Humidity could drop as low as 12 percent, with temperatures climbing as high as 87 degrees.
Forecasters say the mix will create erratic fire behavior and rapid fire spread.
The worst conditions are expected across the lower to mid elevations in fine fuels such as dry grass.
NWS Billings flagged the heat and fire risk for the day.
Warm Pattern Continues
The fire danger isn’t expected to ease right away.
Forecasters say highs will stay well above normal through the work week.
What a Red Flag Warning Means
A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring now or will shortly.
Gusty winds, low humidity and unseasonably warm temperatures together can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
Safety Reminders
Avoid outdoor burning and anything that could create a spark, such as dragging chains, parking on dry grass or using equipment in dry vegetation.
Stay alert to changing conditions and report any smoke or fire to local authorities right away.
