The U.S. Embassy in Havana has issued a new security alert warning American citizens living in or traveling to Cuba about a significant increase in thefts and violent incidents linked to the island’s ongoing economic crisis.
According to the embassy, the deteriorating economic conditions have contributed to a noticeable rise in crime throughout Havana and other parts of the country. Reported incidents include thefts involving knives and other edged weapons, minor assaults targeting embassy vehicles, and even home invasions resulting in the loss of personal property. Officials also noted that frequent power outages across Cuba are creating conditions that embolden criminals to act under the cover of darkness.
