A new Severe Thunderstorm Watch covers a swath of western South Dakota through Tuesday evening, part of a broader severe weather setup stretching from North Dakota to Nebraska with the potential for hail up to the size of golf balls and wind gusts of 70 mph.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch 569: Western South Dakota Until 8 PM
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma issued Watch 569 until 8 PM MDT for Bennett, Butte, Custer, Fall River, Haakon, Jackson, Lawrence, Meade, Oglala Lakota, Pennington and Ziebach counties, covering the Black Hills and Badlands region.
South Central and Southwest North Dakota: Golf Ball Hail Possible Tonight
The NWS Bismarck office says isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are possible late this afternoon through tonight across a wide stretch of the state, including Burleigh County (Bismarck), Morton, Stark, Mercer, Dunn and Stutsman counties.
Hail up to golf ball size and 70 mph wind gusts are the main threats tonight. Isolated severe storms remain possible Wednesday, with quarter-size hail and 60 mph winds the primary concern.
Central South Dakota: Slight Risk for 2-Inch Hail
The NWS Aberdeen office has a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) in place for scattered storms west of the James River valley in the late afternoon and overnight hours.
Hail up to 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph are possible across Corson, Campbell, McPherson, Brown, Walworth, Edmunds, Dewey, Potter, Faulk, Stanley, Sully, Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman and Buffalo counties, including the Pierre area. A Marginal Risk continues Wednesday evening with hail near 1 inch and gusts up to 60 mph.
Western and North Central Nebraska: Large Hail and Damaging Winds
The NWS North Platte office expects scattered thunderstorms, a few severe, late this afternoon and evening across northern Nebraska, with large hail and damaging winds the main concerns.
Additional chances for strong to severe storms return Wednesday afternoon and evening, before the threat shifts to locally heavy rainfall Wednesday night through Saturday.
Eastern South Dakota, Northwest Iowa and Southwest Minnesota: Another Overnight Round
The NWS Sioux Falls office says another round of strong to severe storms could develop late this evening into the overnight hours, potentially forming a cluster that moves southeast into Wednesday.
Golf ball-size hail and 60 mph wind gusts are the main hazards across a broad area covering Sioux Falls, Yankton, Brookings and surrounding counties in South Dakota, along with parts of northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota and northeast Nebraska. Periodic storm chances continue nightly through Wednesday, with a few storms again capable of turning severe.
