Northwest Travel Dispatch, Summer 2016

1. Victoria

The new Songhees Cultural Tour[1] pairs a boat ride to protected islands with a Songhees First Nations cultural guide, so you’ll know what bannock is before ordering it at the Inner Harbour’s new Songhees food truck[2].

2. Skagit Port

Bellingham’s Chuckanut Brewery[3] extends its reach with a new brew house and taproom between Anacortes and Mount Vernon, where the brewery makes the case for lager in this land of ales.

3. Coupeville

The 68-foot teak schooner Suva [4]can carry up to 14 people on two-and-a-half-hour cruises around Whidbey, a crowd big enough for an on-deck shellfish picnic but probably not enough to consider a foray into piracy.

4. Seattle

With a rooftop deck and room windows that overlook Pike Place Market, the new Thompson Seattle[5] tempts locals to ditch the city’s overpriced real estate and just move into the luxury boutique hotel.

5. Spokane

Now that a local tribe took ownership of the historic country club to rename it the Kalispel Golf and Country Club[6], public tee times are available—because everyone deserves the crazy-making humiliation of a triple bogey.

6. Cascade Locks

There’s no pedestrian walkway on the Columbia-spanning Bridge of the Gods—because cars are our gods now—but runners get free rein during a half marathon and 10k that end in a Thunder Island party. (Aug 7)[7]

7. Portland

Two music fests meld into one at MusicfestNW Presents Project Pabst, kind of how coheadliners Duran Duran and Ice Cube will meld into one confusing nostalgia trip where diss tracks have sax solos. (Aug 27 & 28)[8]

8. Bend

McMenamins Old St. Francis School[9] triples in size with 41 new hotel rooms, many named for the teachers who once enriched young minds and haunted delinquents’ nightmares on the former Catholic school property.
