A new congressional analysis argues that New Hampshire took one of the steepest financial hits along the northern border as political friction between Washington and Ottawa discouraged Canadians from traveling south.
According to reporting by the Concord Monitor carried by the Valley News, New Hampshire saw 30% fewer visitors from Canada last summer, a decline state officials attributed to a mix of tariffs, tighter border controls and heightened political rhetoric.
Democratic staff for the Joint Economic Committee (JEC)—where Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire is the ranking member—said the pattern is visible across every U.S. state that borders Canada, but that New Hampshire stands out on several measures.
