I Heart My City (in the Fall)

Fall is kicking into full swing (for the northern half of the world, at least), so we thought we’d celebrate the season with a special edition of I Heart My City[1].

Here are 20 fall must-dos from I Heart contributors in 20 cities around the world:

Martins’s Riga[2] (Latvia): Check out some of the many events that are going on — White Night[3]Survival Kit[4], and Latvia’s Independence Day[5] among them — and celebrate with the locals.

Shanley’s Kansas City[6] (USA): Watch the Country Club Plaza lighting ceremony[7], a local Thanksgiving tradition!

Simon’s Essaouira[8] (Morocco): See the Festival des Andalousies Atlantiques[9] — celebrating Andalucian, Arab, and Judeo-Moroccan/Arab music.

Arianna’s Milan[10] (Italy): Take the old tram line 29[11] and have a look around the city from the original wooden seats.

Elizabeth’s Dallas[12] (USA): Go to a Dallas Cowboys[13] football game.

Rosa’s Bristol[14] (England): See the boat race[15] from the train station in Temple Meads[16] to Baltic Wharf[17].

Audrey’s Seoul[18] (South Korea): Climb Namsan[19] with your sweetheart and admire the colorful foliage. Once on top of the mountain you can “lock” your love on the wall, where thousands of other couples have placed “love locks.”

Erik’s Brooklyn[20] (USA): Go for a stroll around Prospect Park[21].

Jennifer’s Abu Dhabi[22] (United Arab Emirates): Hit the Formula 1[23] festivities: the yachts in the Yas Marina, the unbelievable concerts, and of course the races, are all worth seeing.

Mehnaz’s Vancouver[24] (Canada): Brave Fright Nights[25] at the Pacific National Exhibition[26] and go the Vancouver International Film Festival[27].

Molly’s Galway[28] (Ireland): Take the ferry out to Inishmore[29]. It’s wild and windswept and remote enough to make you feel like you’re standing on the edge of the world.

Clayton’s Albuquerque[30] (USA): Drive up north and see the leaves turn in the Sangre de Cristo mountains[31].

Karla’s Zagreb[32] (Croatia): Get ready for excellent film and music festivals. Film festivals include theZagreb Film Festival[33]25 FPS[34], and One Take Film Festival[35]VIP Zagreb Jazz Festival[36] offers premium jazz music, while Rujan Fest[37] is a giant lakeside celebration in September. Fall is also chestnut season in Croatia, so seek some chestnut purées or cakes in the local patisseries.

Ellen’s Antalya[38] (Turkey): Enjoy the beautiful weather because it’s the best time of year in Antalya. The tourists are gone, but the sea is still warm enough to swim in. This is also the beginning of the cultural season, when Antalya’s symphony[39]opera, and ballet[40] open.

Bruce’s Cambridge[41] (USA): Take a riverboat ride on the Charles[42].

Hanoi Opera House (Photograph by Prashant Ram, Flickr)

Tranh Ha’s Hanoi[43] (Vietnam): Take photos on Hoang Dieu street. The picturesque Thang Long Imperial Citadel[44] sits here. Or, if you’re in the mood for some entertainment, see a show at the Hanoi Opera House.

Julia’s Glasgow[45] (Scotland): Head to one of Glasgow’s many parks — such as Kelvingrove Park[46]Queen’s Park[47], and Pollok Country Park[48] – to see the stunning range of autumn colors on display. Afterwards, head indoors for some tea and a slice of cake.

Nuno’s Lisbon[49] (Portugal): Explore the old shops and trendy cafes and buy a good book to read.

Barrett’s Charleston[50] (USA): Catch a parade[51] on the grounds of South Carolina’s military college, The Citadel[52], when the evenings turn crisp.

Karina’s Tallinn[53] (Estonia): Go to Pierre Chocolaterie[54] to have a cup of thick hot chocolate, then explore the city by taking Tram 1 from Kadriorg to Kopli[55].
