The Southwest heat wave is far from over. Extreme Heat Warnings now stretch into Utah, and several existing warnings have been extended into the weekend.
Highs in the hardest-hit desert basins will still reach up to 120 degrees.
Mojave Desert and Las Vegas: Extended Through Saturday
The NWS Las Vegas office extended its warning through 8 PM Saturday.
It covers Las Vegas, Henderson, Pahrump, Laughlin, Kingman and Death Valley National Park.
Highs of 110 to 120 degrees are expected across the Mojave Desert. Overnight lows could stay at 80 to 95 degrees, offering little relief after dark.
Forecasters call it a major-to-extreme heat risk.
Yuma, Parker and the Colorado River Valley: Through Friday
The NWS Phoenix office extended its warning for Yuma, La Paz and eastern Riverside counties through 8 PM Friday.
Afternoon temperatures of 107 to 117 degrees are expected. Yuma, Parker, Blythe and Quartzsite are all included.
Rural Maricopa and northern Pinal counties — including Gila Bend, Casa Grande and Apache Junction — face 107 to 115 through the same Friday deadline.
Joshua Tree National Park and the Chuckwalla Mountains are under warning too, with highs of 98 to 115 through Friday.
Coachella Valley and the Inland Empire
The NWS San Diego office kept the Coachella Valley under warning through 8 PM Tuesday, with highs of 110 to 116.
Palm Springs, Indio and La Quinta are included.
The Inland Empire — Riverside, San Bernardino, Fontana and Ontario — has a shorter warning, expiring at 8 PM Monday. Highs there run from the mid-90s to 105.
The Apple and Lucerne Valleys, including Victorville and Hesperia, stay under warning through Wednesday, with highs of 100 to 110.
New: Southern Utah Joins the Warning
The NWS Salt Lake City office has a warning in effect for southern Utah through 9 PM Monday.
Zion National Park, Capitol Reef National Park and Glen Canyon Recreation Area around Lake Powell are all included.
Temperatures could reach up to 105 degrees. Zion Canyon and Lower Washington County, including St. George, could get close to 110.
Grand Canyon and Central Arizona
The lower Grand Canyon remains under warning through 8 PM Wednesday.
Havasupai Gardens could hit 102 to 107 degrees. Phantom Ranch, deeper in the canyon, could reach 110 to 114.
Day hikers on Bright Angel Trail should go no farther than a mile and a half from the trailhead. Between 10 AM and 4 PM, hikers should be resting in shade, not on the trail.
The Verde Valley area, including Camp Verde, Payson and Cottonwood, stays under warning through this evening, with highs of 105 to 112.
Ridgecrest and the Antelope Valley
Near Ridgecrest and Edwards Air Force Base, the NWS Hanford office extended its warning through Wednesday, with highs up to 112 and overnight lows staying near 75 to 80.
The Antelope Valley, including Lancaster and Palmdale, is under warning through Wednesday, with highs of 100 to 110.
The mountains of northern Ventura County, near Mount Pinos, stay warm too — 95 to 105, locally up to 108, through Tuesday evening.
What to Do During Extreme Heat
Drink plenty of fluids. Stay in air conditioning when you can.
Never leave kids or pets in a parked car, even briefly.
If you work outside, take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning. Save strenuous tasks for early morning or evening.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 right away if someone shows signs of it.
Check on relatives and neighbors, especially older adults living alone. Maricopa County residents without air conditioning can call 211 for a cooling center.
