CHICAGO, IL (January 22, 2026) – A significant extreme cold weather warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for Illinois, Michigan, and at least seven other Midwestern and Northern Plains states.
The advisory comes amid dangerously low temperatures and wind chills expected to plunge well below zero through Friday and into the weekend.
The NWS has activated Extreme Cold Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories across the affected regions, with wind chills forecasted to drop as low as 55 degrees below zero in some areas.
In several locations, frostbite could occur within 5 to 10 minutes of exposure to the cold.
