Atmospheric River Death Toll Rises as Floods Batter Santa Barbara and L.A.

A powerful atmospheric river system continues to wreak havoc across Southern California, with at least one confirmed death and widespread flooding prompting emergency declarations and mass mobilization of rescue crews.

The victim, a 29-year-old man, was found dead after being swept into a fast-moving creek in Santa Barbara County, marking a grim milestone in what has become a deadly holiday season for the region.

“This is one of the most intense storm systems we’ve seen this season,” said Eric Boldt, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Los Angeles. “People need to take these flood warnings very seriously.”
