One one side are established authors including Stephen King[3], John Grisham[4] and James Patterson[5]. On the other side are self-published authors.

They’re taking sides in the weeks-old dispute[6] between Amazon.com[7] Inc. and Hachette Book Group[8].

King, Grisham and Patterson have signed their names to a petition started by[9] author Douglas Preston[10]. The petition encourages “Amazon in the strongest possible terms to stop harming the livelihood of the authors on whom it has built its business. None of us, neither readers nor authors, benefit when books are taken hostage.”

On the other side is a petition started by author Hugh Howey[11], which supports Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and rails against “New York Publishing.”

“Major publishers like Hachette have a long history of treating authors and readers poorly. Amazon, on the other hand, has built its reputation on valuing authors and readers dearly. The two companies didn’t simultaneously change directions overnight. … All the complaints about Amazon should be directed at Hachette,” according to Howey’s petition.[12]
