Sovereignty took home the 2025 Kentucky Derby as he held off the favorite in Journalism with a brilliant move after the turn for home.
While Journalism had looked unbeatable with plenty in the tank in each of his last four wins, he didn’t have enough for the extra stretch that the Derby requires at 10 furlongs. And the alternate Baeza had an awful good showing as well, but just like in the Santa Anita Derby, he finishes just behind Journalism.
Sovereignty got edged in the Florida Derby by just over a length, but had plenty of closing speed and the added furlong at Churchill Downs fit him well.
