Jets work out free-agent quarterback David Garrard

In an attempt to find veteran competition for Mark Sanchez, the New York Jets worked out former Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins quarterback David Garrard on Thursday, according to a person informed of the visit.

The person, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the team doesn’t confirm workouts, said Garrard spent all afternoon with the team and underwent a physical to determine the health of his knee. It was unclear as of early Thursday evening whether Garrard was still at the Jets’ facility.

Garrard’s visit was first reported[1] by the New York Daily News early in the afternoon.

RESTRUCTURING: Running wild in the NFL[2]

BELL: Alex Smith good fit for Chiefs[3]

Garrard, 35, missed all of last season after being cut by the Dolphins in early September. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery a month earlier.

In nine seasons in Jacksonville from 2002 to 2010, Garrard started 76 games and threw for 16,003 yards and 89 touchdowns. The part of his stat line that could interest the Jets the most: only 54 interceptions. That’s a rate of one interception every 42.2 attempts. Sanchez averages an interception every 27.1 passes.
