The 2025 FIBA Women’s EuroBasket tournament begins next week, and you may have heard about it in the context of key WNBA players temporarily leaving their pro teams to play for their home countries.
16 European countries will participate in the tournament: Czechia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Sweden, Turkey, France, Spain, Serbia, Belgium, Britain, Lithuania, Montenegro, Portugal, Slovenia, and Switzerland. The winner will be crowned European Champions.
The tournament also serves as a qualifer; the top six teams will qualify for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which takes place next summer. Germany, the host country for the 2026 World Cup, will automatically qualify.
