With as little as 24 hours’ notice, hundreds of American Red Cross volunteers have deployed to Washington. Some will stay through Christmas.
AUBURN, Wash. — As floodwaters inundated neighborhoods across western Washington over the past week, a nationwide network of American Red Cross volunteers mobilized quickly — many arriving within a day’s notice to help staff shelters, deliver meals and support families displaced by the disaster.
The Red Cross says about 300 trained volunteers and partner responders are currently supporting flood response efforts across at least 10 counties. As of Wednesday night, 12 shelters were open statewide, housing roughly 185 people overnight. Since shelters first opened
