“The Rock” has been used as a community canvas for generations, but a WSDOT project is forcing its removal.
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — It’s one of those things where, if you know, you know.
“It’s tradition,” said Mimi Ferlin. “You just come out here and paint ‘The Rock.'”
“The Rock,” as it’s affectionately known, emerged when a stretch of Interstate 5 just south of Bellingham was widened in the 1960s. Since then it has become the community’s canvas.
“It’s kind of like a gateway coming into Bellingham,” said Todd Starr. “You know you’re home when you see it.”
