Whatcom County’s overdose death rate surpasses that of King County

Whatcom’s overdose death rate per 100,000 people is 55.42.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Whatcom County Medical Examiner says that the county has a higher overdose death rate than King County.

Both counties set records for overdose deaths in 2023. Most of the deaths are attributed the fentanyl.

The first time Kevin tried fentanyl he overdosed and was technically dead.

“I was just sitting at a table and somebody broke out a pill. Next thing I know I’m waking up with blue sweat running down my face and I knew I OD’d and died,” said Kevin, who asked KING 5 not to use
