Washington's North Cascades Highway reopens, but drivers will have to take it slow

Washington’s scenic State Route 20, also known as the North Cascades Highway, reopened to vehicle traffic this week after a series of closures last month as crews responded to wildfires burning near Mazama.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced Monday that there were no current closures on the highway. However, as fire crews remain in the area, the department reduced speeds from milepost 144 to 171.

“Fire response crews continue to use the highway for staging and work, so currently there is a 35 mph reduced speed,” wrote WSDOT in an update Monday.
