Skamania County Sheriff Summer Scheyer is drafting a new ordinance that would fine negligent or reckless hikers $1,000 if their actions lead to costly search and rescue operations. The idea, still in its early stages, comes as her office responds to an alarming rise in calls from lost, injured, or stranded hikers — often on trails made popular by social media influencers.
