Washington leaders warn AmeriCorps cuts will impact trails, public lands

Public Lands Commissioner Dave Upthegrove called the AmeriCorps cuts a “stab in the back.”

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Washington leaders are sounding the alarm after President Trump cut funding for AmeriCorps, effectively ending the service program.

“This is one more just stab in the back from the federal administration when it comes to outdoors and recreation,” said Dave Upthegrove, Washington Public Lands commissioner. 

The $400 million in funding cuts includes $21.6 million for Washington state. AmeriCorps volunteers provide services in Washington, including wildfire prevention, staffing for food banks, supporting veterans and seniors, providing college preparation for youth and tutoring children.
