Backyard bird watching has taken off during the pandemic, but Washington health officials are reminding residents to take precautions when handling feeders and baths after six people in the state have been sickened by salmonella linked to songbirds.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently monitoring a multi-state outbreak of salmonella typhimurium that has sickened a total of 19 people. Of the six cases reported in Washington, three have required hospitalization.
Symptoms of salmonella include include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In severe cases, infections can be fatal.
