Wash. wildlife officials ask residents to inspect aquarium moss after invasive zebra mussels found

Washington wildlife officials are asking residents to inspect any newly purchased aquarium moss for signs of invasive zebra mussels after the species was found in products being sold by national retailers Petco and Petsmart.

On Thursday, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) reported that zebra mussels had been identified in Marimo moss balls bought by Washington residents, including from pet supply stores in Seattle.

The national retailers have quickly pulled the products off their shelves, but wildlife officials worry that the mussels could enter Washington’s waterways if disposed of improperly.
