Utilities hope new laws, concrete blocks will curb copper thieves

MASON COUNTY, Wash. — Mason County’s Public Utility District is having to get creative to combat an increase in copper wire theft.

“Blunt force is what we’re doing here,” said Justin Holzgrove, from Mason County PUD 3.

Last year, after copper wire thieves broke into underground junction boxes, the power utility decided to place 1-ton concrete blocks over the top of the junction boxes making it harder for thieves to access wires.

Holzgrove said they have also started replacing copper wiring with steel alternatives, that aren’t worth as much at metal recyclers.
