Unique Seattle-based icebreaker departs for ‘vital’ Antarctic mission

SEATTLE — The only U.S. vessel capable of breaking a navigable channel through ice up to 21 feet thick departed Seattle on Wednesday for its annual Antarctic deployment, the Coast Guard said.
