Tsunami advisory in western Washington: What to know

Washington’s coastal communities are under a tsunami advisory after a massive earthquake in Russia; residents urged to avoid beaches.

SEATTLE — Washington’s coastal communities are under a Tsunami Advisory following a massive earthquake in Russia on Tuesday night.

The 8.8 quake hit in the Far East region off of Russia, prompting tsunami warnings, watches and advisories for Japan, Hawaii, Alaska and the U.S. West Coast.

A tsunami advisory warns of the potential for strong currents or waves that could be dangerous to people who are in or near the water, according to the National Weather Service.
