Trump administration cancels $1 million grant for Tacoma community schoolyard project

Despite the loss of the grant, community groups and agencies in Tacoma are working together to complete the project. The renovated schoolyard will open next spring.

TACOMA, Wash. — The Trump administration canceled a major grant to renovate a Tacoma schoolyard in a historically underserved area. Now community groups are working together to move the project forward, despite the loss of funding.

Some of the planned additions at the Larchmont Elementary schoolyard will be delayed due to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) terminating the $1 million grant.

“Quite frankly, it was crushing,” said Nancy Johnson,  the Communications and Engagement Manager for Parks Tacoma.
