Trial to begin for man accused of killing WSP trooper while driving under the influence

Benitez-Santana is accused of being under the influence and driving over 100 mph when he crashed into Trooper Gadd’s vehicle.

EVERETT, Wash. — Opening statements are set to begin Friday in the trial over the death of a Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper in March of last year.

Trooper Christopher Gadd was inside his patrol vehicle just before 3 a.m. on the southbound shoulder of Interstate 5 near Marysville when he was struck by another driver on March 2, 2024. Gadd was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver, Raul Benitez-Santana, was arrested.
