Traffic deaths fall in Washington for the first time since 2019

This comes after 809 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2023, which was a 33-year high.

SEATTLE — Traffic deaths fell in Washington state last year for the first time since 2019, according to new data from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC).

Preliminary traffic data from the WTSC found that 731 people died in traffic crashes in 2024, a decrease from 809 traffic deaths in 2023. The death toll in 2023 was a 33-year high, according to the WTSC. 

Washington’s traffic deaths hovered around 550 each year from 2015 to 2020, before deaths spiked to 674 in 2021 and 743 in 2022.
