‘The energy was palpable’: Millions of escaped bees turn wild

Their chances of survival are high based on the rural location of the accident, the time of year, and the observed behavior of the swarms.

LYNDEN, Wash. — After an estimated 15 million bees were unleashed by an overturned delivery truck in Whatcom County, cleanup crews have concluded their work and previously closed roads have reopened, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.

Beekeepers at the scene said the insects will likely become wild, swarming into nearby forests to start new colonies or join existing ones. Whatcom County revised its estimate down from the previously reported hundreds of millions of bees.
