BELLINGHAM, Wash. — When you’ve been a brewery’s unofficial “mother” for 30 years, saying goodbye is kind of like a funeral.

“We’re just hugging and laughing and crying and hugging and laughing and crying,” said Janet Lightner, owner of Boundary Bay Brewery, known to many as “Mama J.”

“And it’s just been all the stages of grief,” added marketing director Shanna Sheridan-McInnis.
