Lincoln High School spotlights its long-running exchange program with China.
TACOMA, Wash. — Students at Lincoln High School in Tacoma marked the 55th anniversary of “ping-pong diplomacy” on Tuesday, revisiting the 1971 table tennis exchange that helped open relations between the United States and China.
In 1971, Chinese officials invited the U.S. national table tennis team to travel across China for friendly matches, making them among the first Americans officially allowed into the country in decades. The exchange helped pave the way for President Richard Nixon’s historic visit to China the following year and became a symbol of people-to-people diplomacy during the Cold War.
