‘Swimmer’s itch’ advisory issued for Thurston County lake

The rash is caused by parasites, usually found in freshwater lakes.

LACEY, Wash. — Swimmers who take a dip at Lacey’s Long Lake should shower immediately afterwards, according to Thurston County health officials.

Otherwise, they could get a rash commonly known as “swimmer’s itch.”

 The county posted signs at the lake to inform the public following a series of cases potentially linked to Long Lake.

”We got a call from a nurse at a school that basically said, ‘We had multiple kids presenting with the red pimples,’ and thought it sounded exactly like swimmer’s itch,” said Stuart Whitford, Environmental Health Program Manager
