SPD chief cites hiring gains, falling crime in first six months

Barnes, who joined the department in January, pointed to falling crime rates during his tenure.

SEATTLE — Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes said Tuesday that the department has hired 87 new officers in the first half of 2025, matching total hiring for all of last year and resulting in a net staffing gain of 47 officers. 

“This is progress,” Barnes said, noting he intends to hire 200 new officers by year’s end. “But we must do more, particularly in attracting and retaining women and people of color.”
