Sex offender who allegedly lured women in Olympia, sexually assaulted them pleads not guilty

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — The sex offender arrested and charged for allegedly luring and sexually assaulting two women in Olympia pleaded not guilty Tuesday, May 14. 

Jerome Lamont Shumate was charged May 3 with two counts of first-degree rape, one count of second-degree rape and one count of second-degree assault. The 43-year-old is held on $750,000 bail.

Prior to his arrest, detectives investigated two reports of sexual assault with similar circumstances, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. Shumate, a registered sex offender, allegedly approached the women in Olympia and lured
