Security, transparency part of Thurston County’s expanded elections facility

The renovation reflects changing times for election officials.

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — Thurston County has a newly expanded ballot processing center designed with input from the Department of Homeland Security, doubling the facility’s size while prioritizing security and public transparency in response to growing scrutiny of election operations.

The renovation reflects changing times for election officials, according to County Auditor Mary Hall, whose election experience dates back to the 1990s. 

“It used to be nobody paid attention to elections. Now we’re in the spotlight all the time,” Hall said.
