Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo opens annual 'zoo doo' compost lottery

Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo opened up its annual Fecal Fest compost program for the summer, giving gardening enthusiasts in the region a chance to get their hands on some sought-after “zoo doo” — the most exotic compost in the Pacific Northwest.

Zoo Doo is feces produced by the zoo’s non-primate herbivores including tapirs, mountain goats, rhinos, hippos, giraffes and zebras. The highly-fertile matter enhances a soil’s water and nutrient retention, improving soil texture. The doo is a completely organic soil amendment, and works best with vegetables and annuals, according to Woodland Park.
