Seattle’s Chinatown-International District buzzes with Lunar New Year crowds

The Chinatown-International District erupted with festivities today, including lion dancers, firecrackers and businesses ushering in the Year of the Fire Horse.

SEATTLE — The Lunar New Year is lighting up Seattle’s Chinatown–International District, where restaurants are packed as the community welcomes the Year of the Fire Horse.

Mak Fai Kung Fu lion dancers performed outside Lam’s Seafood Asian Market in Little Saigon Tuesday to lively drumming and bursts of firecrackers. For performer Han Eckelberg, the tradition carries deeper meaning.

“We’re scaring away the evil that we brought from last year, to make room for the fortune of the new year,” Eckelberg said.
