Seattle’s Catholic community celebrates first American-born pope

Despite skepticism due to the United States’ geopolitical power, Pope Leo XIV is the first American-born pope.

SEATTLE — Just over 24 hours after the conclave began deliberating, a historic notification appeared on Vivian Shannon’s smartwatch while she was at mass: the new pope was selected.

“I looked at his face, and I was like, ‘What?’ I zoomed right in and thought, ‘No way, it can’t be him,’” she said.
