Seattle moves to ban algorithmic rent-setting

SEATTLE — Seattle’s City Council has advanced an ordinance aimed at banning “algorithmic rent fixing” — a method where landlords use software tools to analyze market data and automatically set rent at the highest possible rate.

Former Seattle resident John Gleason remembers paying just $800 for a two-bedroom apartment on Crown Hill in 2006.

“That seems unthinkable now,” Gleason said.
