Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson announces pause on CCTV pilot expansion

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is halting further expansion of the city’s surveillance program for an audit, except for non-activated cameras in the Stadium District.

SEATTLE — Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson on Thursday announced changes to the city’s surveillance pilot program, including a pause on expansion and adjustments to cameras already in use.

Speaking at a news conference, Wilson said the city will conduct a data and privacy audit while the program is paused. Although the pause halts further camera expansion, she made an exception for planned installations in Seattle’s Stadium District ahead of the FIFA World Cup, noting they will not be activated once installed.
