Seattle council proposes sales tax increase to expand addiction treatment

SEATTLE — Seattle City Council President Sara Nelson is proposing a new sales tax increase aimed at expanding access to addiction treatment and support services across the city, as overdose deaths continue to surge amid the fentanyl crisis.

Announced Tuesday in Occidental Square alongside recovery providers and community leaders, the measure would raise the city’s sales tax by one-tenth of a percent. The additional revenue—projected to bring in millions—would be used to increase treatment capacity, fund job training programs, and invest in new strategies to address opioid addiction.
