Seattle bids farewell to Memorial Stadium

SEATTLE — The first shovels are breaking ground on the multipurpose stadium to replace the historic Memorial Stadium, ending the 77-year run of a venue that has served as the cornerstone of Seattle sports and entertainment.

Memorial Stadium opened in 1947 and quickly became a cultural landmark for the city. The venue hosted the first Northwest television broadcast — a high school football game on KING 5 in 1948.
