Schools must upgrade security under ‘Alyssa’s Law’

The law named after Alyssa Alhadeff, a Florida school shooting victim.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Alyssa Alhadeff wanted to be a lawyer and change the world, according to her mother, Lori Alhadeff.

But in 2018, the 14-year-old was one of 17 killed during a mass shooting at Majory Stoneham Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Today Alyssa’s story is changing state laws across the country.

On Monday, Washington state Gov.Bob Ferguson signed “Alyssa’s Law” into effect. Senate Bill 5004 requires school districts to coordinate emergency plans with local first responders. Districts also must ensure schools have at least one piece of technology to
